VALONGO HANGING GARDEN

The old Rua do Valongo, which connected Cais do Valongo to Largo do Depósito, housed shops that sold slaves and articles related to the practice of slavery.

On the axis formed by this path, newly arrived slaves were housed in barracks known as fattening houses, where they literally gained weight, in order to increase their price on the market.

This area also housed markets where enslaved Africans were displayed to potential buyers. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the road was widened, the Valongo Hanging Garden, the Guard House and the Public Urinal were built. Part of Mayor Pereira Passos' plan to remodel and beautify the city, the park was designed by landscape architect Luis Rey and opened in 1906.

Archaeological excavation found a vast collection of items that refer to the "household junk" of the time, revealing aspects of the daily life, customs and mentality of the inhabitants of Morro da Conceição.
