Transforming Valongo Pier with Light and Art

Valongo Wharf, one of the most iconic locations on the African Heritage Circuit, is being transformed by an innovative stage lighting project. In partnership with GSOL and EBCA, this initiative aims to create a vibrant and interactive environment, valuing the memory and culture of the place.

Storytelling Lighting

This project aims to integrate cutting-edge technology with historical preservation, ensuring that Valongo Wharf continues to be a space for reflection and learning. With more than 50 strategically positioned lighting poles, the initiative not only enhances the beauty of the archaeological site, but also provides a safe and interactive environment for residents and visitors.
The lighting will be monitored in real time by the Rio City Hall Operations Center, ensuring full control over the lighting effects and the safety of the space.

Intelligent Control and Sustainability

The implementation of a SmartGrid Network allows for efficient management of public and stage lighting, ensuring sustainability and flexibility in the creation of lighting scenarios. In addition, the project features smart security cameras, which monitor the site and provide images to security and preservation agencies.

Other added technologies include:

✅ Public Wi-Fi Network, with information about the African Heritage Circuit and Little Africa.

✅ Climate sensors, which monitor environmental conditions.

✅ Interactive systems, which allow visitors to explore the history of the site in an innovative way

Rescuing History with Light

Valongo Wharf is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its revitalization through stage lighting reinforces its importance in the context of the African diaspora. The initiative seeks not only to highlight the site's architecture, but also to create a space for memory and reflection on the history of enslaved Africans who passed through there.

The complexity of implementing this project on an archaeological site requires careful planning, ensuring that all interventions respect and value the cultural and historical heritage of the space.
